Process by which substances are washed out of
the soil. Fertilizers leached out of the soil
find their way into rivers and cause water
pollution. In tropical areas, leaching of the
soil after deforestation removes scarce
nutrients and leads to a dramatic loss of
soil fertility. The leaching of soluble
minerals in soils can lead to the formation
of distinct horizons as different minerals
are deposited at successively lower levels.
